Matthew Small (born 1975) is a British portrait artist. He studied illustration at the University of Westminster and then went on to The Royal College of Art. His work is often mistakenly labelled as urban, or linked to street art. These urban root connotations are partly due to his application of paint onto industrial materials which have been found and recycled, such as car bonnets, paving slabs and fridge doors. Much like his canvases, his subjects are also found, sometimes in the streets or local parks. They are observed and filmed from a discreet distance, capturing their real identity and character, as opposed to traditional portraits that capture the subject as they would prefer to be perceived. A simply phenomenal artist.
